The art of making wooden stuffs decorated with polygonal patterns is named KHATAM.

Khātam is a version of marquetry, handicrafted arts made by decorating the surface of wooden articles with delicate pieces of wood, bone and metal that are precisely-cut and make geometrical shapes. Common materials used in the construction of Khātam products are different type of woods, gold, silver, bone or artificial bone (in old samples the camel bones is used), brass, aluminum, twisted wire and adhesive.

These materials are stick to each other by natural adhesives and then cut to very narrow slices and then these slices will be fixed precisely on the surface of the wooden body by adhesive. After that, the entire surface is covered with polyester protection layer to maintain it better and make it glossier.

Artworks with smaller pieces are generally more highly valued.In old samples of Khatam artworks, normally more than 600 small pieces per square inches could be found.
